National Addiction Awareness Week

Picture
I know firsthand how addiction can fracture family bonds. Trust fades, honesty disappears, and everything changes. Healing a relationship means so much more than simply “stopping” an addiction — it’s about rebuilding safety, trust, and genuine connection for everyone involved.

But sometimes the person you love isn’t ready to be honest with themselves, or you. They may still be caught in denial, shame, or fear — unable or unwilling to face the truth. That’s one of the hardest parts of loving someone through addiction: realizing that no matter how much you want healing for them, you can’t force their honesty or accountability.

Accountability is the foundation of real change. Without it, trust can’t rebuild. And as painful as that is to accept, it’s also where your own healing begins. You can’t control their journey, but you can choose to show up differently in yours.

Healing on your own might mean setting and maintaining boundaries, surrendering and accepting as you let go, and allowing space for your own truth to expand. It’s not about giving up on them; it’s about remaining true to yourself.

You can find healing even when they’re not ready. You can rebuild safety within yourself. And you can live with compassion — both for them, and for you — while still choosing honesty, accountability, and growth in your own life.
